Hi, I'm a new player and also relatively new to Magic.
I started about a month ago when a group formed on a similar game site (fumbbl.com). We have just finished playing the first tournament which was a 4 round swiss style sealed deck tournament using alpha starters and a mix of very early boosters, I think I've won it which was a pleasant suprise I have found Magic is a neat game with plenty of variation and fun and I'm very impressed with MWS so I want to play some more magic. I tried out a draft which was pretty fun as well as some T1 style games which were less fun... I definately prefer sealed and draft formats because they force you to think a bit more and work with what you've got.
I'd like to get involved with some of the stuff on your site but I have some questions first...
- Is there much interest in older cardsets or will I only be able to get games in a particular edition, if so then which edition?
- How fast do I need to be able to play and deckbuild?
- Is there a "right" time of day to join chat if I want to get games fast?
- Is the draft software you use Netdraft?
- How do you handle disconnects?
- Are there any unusual site rules that often catch newbies out?
I'm sure I'll think of a few more in a minute but that will do for now |

- Is there much interest in older cardsets or will I only be able to get games in a particular edition, if so then which edition? - we play pretty much everything here, we have alot of t2, extended and ala sealed obv, as we do have a couple of serious players on the site and practice is always good. We also play older formats, and random sealed minis. Most of the tournaments are 8 man single elminination
- How fast do I need to be able to play and deckbuild? You have to play at a normal pace, if it takes you like 2 minutes to use a fetchland or something, you will get a slow play warning. You have 15 minutes to build sealed decks, which is done on the site, not mws...youll see it on the front page if you have registered for a sealed once it starts.
- Is there a "right" time of day to join chat if I want to get games fast?Nope, there are tournaments at all times of day, but ive had better luck during the evening and aftertoon (EST)
- Is the draft software you use Netdraft? yes, we use netdraft, but we seem to do much more sealed which is done on the site. they also have drafts forming in another chatroom
- How do you handle disconnects? if you cant reconnect the player that disconnected gets a game lose. Of course its not hard to make mws crash, so if you do it on purpose you can get a game loss too.
- Are there any unusual site rules that often catch newbies out? show up on time for your matches, use phases in mws, follow proper tournament procedure(like dont draw your hand before rolling...). If you follow simple rules you will be fine. |
