Question about tapping

Do I need to tap before I play a spell, or can I tap everything after? I want to slam a card down during an awesome match, but playing it after I tap might make it have less effect.

Feel free to windmill down the card from the top of your deck, passing gently by your anus, should the urge take you.

Tapping mana is clearly for people who're too busy competing to face the awesomeness of the magical card you're using.

Oh and if you wanted to know rules you play costs on the announcement of the spell (ie at the same time without ever passing priority.) [Insert comprehensive rule # and text here]

For this reason you can play thoughtcast with 4 artifacts in play AND sacrifice one of them, say a chromatic sphere, for a single blue in one fluid motion

technically you declare you are playing the spell. Then pay its cost. the it gets played.
