I was messing around today and eventually came up with a mono-R deck that just might be good in standard...maybe.
Suggestions to make it better would be awesome.
Land:
Mountain x20
Creatures:
Ashenmoor Gouger x4
Stigma Lasher x2
Hearthfire Hobgoblin x4
Hearthfire Cinder x4
Nobilis of War x2
Figure of Destiny x1 (I only have one of these )
Sorcery:
Rite of Flame x4
Instants:
Flame Javelin x4
Incinerate x4
Flame Jab x4
Double Cleave x3
Brute Force x4
Sideboard:
Guttural Response x4
Hurly-Burly x4 (Mostly for Faeries)
Smash to Smithereens x4
??? x3 |

- 4 rite of flame , you're not accel'ing into much.
-2 stigma lasher. he's a vanilla 2/2 half the time
-4 heartlash cinder, they dont work as well as you think, they're just a 1/1 the turn after.
try +2 mountains
+3 boggart ram gangs or blood knights
+3 puncture blast
+4 mogg fanatic
SB stigma lasher and firespouts are better instead of hurly burly. as a 1 oona can make it useless. Or atleast a pyroclasm. |

Hmm, I like the Boggart Ram-Gang. Kinda feel stupid for missing that...
So I'll take out the 4 Rite of Flames, 2 Hearthflame Cinders cause they are working somewhat well, and the 2 Stigma Lashers in exchange for 3 Boggart Ram Gangs, 2 Blood Knights, and 3 Puncture Blasts.
Also, I have no green so Firespout is worthless against Faeries.
So it looks like:
Land:
Mountain x20
Creatures:
Ashenmoor Gouger x4
Hearthfire Hobgoblin x4
Boggart Ram-Gang x3
Blood Knight x2
Hearthfire Cinder x2
Nobilis of War x2
Figure of Destiny x1 (I only have one of these )
Instants:
Flame Javelin x4
Incinerate x4
Flame Jab x4
Double Cleave x3
Brute Force x4
Puncture Blast x3
Sideboard:
Guttural Response x4
Hurly-Burly x4 (Mostly for Faeries)
Smash to Smithereens x4
Stigma Lasher x3 (???) |

Instead of 7 instants that targets your own creatures, something which is a waste of space once you are in topdeck mode, add 4 Shock and 3 Keldon Megaliths.
Your deck is aggro and wants to do the exact same thing every game. Therefore 2-ofs and 1-ofs are worthless.
So you need to drop a creature turn 1 turn 2 and turn 3, then start burning.
You have 1 1-drop, 3 2-drops (cinder doesnt count) and 11 3-drops.
That doesn't work.
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Blood Knight
4 Keldon Marauders
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Boggart Ram-Gang
4 Shock
4 Incinerate
4 Flame Javelin
1 whatever
20 Mountain
3 Keldon Megaliths
24 creatures is a bit much - the ideal is 20 creatures 20 spells 20 lands, but today's standard is very curve-intensive so you need more than 20 lands. So you are free to remove for instance 1 gouger, 1 ram-gang and 1 figure in order to have 4 whatevers.
In a deck like this, there is not much room for replacement cards and variation... there are best drops in all slots. Demigod of Revenge is good in this type of deck, and should probably be in there in place of either Gouger or Ram-Gang.
Edit: or Demigod as "whatever" of course... |

This is an archetype. Accepted build:
// lands 24
24 Snow-Covered Mountain
// creatures
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Blood Knight
4 Magus of the Moon
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Demigod of Revenge
// spells
4 Incinerate
4 Flame Javelin
4 Skred
// sideboard
3 Unwilling Recruit
4 Dragon's Claw
4 Pithing Needle
4 Vexing Shusher
EDIT: Ofc builds differ though, I play no magi and more burn, but I think this list is generally ideal.

| Scion pumps your other faeries to 2/2's but they all die from a hurly burly in the end. |

I'm a competitive player and all, but I simply refuse to use a Mogg Fanatic simply because I hate it that much. As well, I am very anti-Metagame. To tell the truth, I made this deck without knowledge that there was that RDW deck.
I could see myself adding the Megaliths and 2 more Blood Knights, but not the Demigod. Bit too meta for me.
Thanks for the suggestions though, and more would be appreciated. |

Why are you anti meta-game?
Adjusting your deck to the metagame is inevitable. The reason for that is that the only way to tune a deck so that it works optimally, is to test it against many different decks and see what it needs in order to become better. The more decks you test it against, the better, since your deck is then being used in more situations.
There is in other words no game outside of the metagame. That is why it is called metagame in the first place. |

I'm anti-meta because I find its taking away from Magic more and more as the years go by. Playing such decks such as Faeries and WW Kithkin are boring, and are no fun, even if you win. I personally don't find winning to be the only thing I want in a game, I want to have fun. I do go to weekly tourneys where their are prized, but fun comes before winning.
Don't get me wrong, I'll play a meta-deck or two just to combat the bullcrap that is meta-decking.
Also, I dislike spending so much money just to have a deck that can stand a chance.
But most of all, I dislike it when people think they are good because they are winning with a meta-deck. |

I think you are confusing meta-decking/gaming with netdecking.
Those are two different things.
Meta-gaming/decking is adjusting your deck to better deal with whatever everyone else is playing.
Netdecking is copying "the best deck" in order to take advantage of the sheer amount of testing said deck has undergone, so that you don't have to do that yourself.
The opposite of meta-ing is therefore to build the deck in a vacuum - untested and not designed to deal with problems it will face once it is played against another deck.
The opposite of netdecking is to build a deck that suits your playing style. Your deck. It can actually be a card-by-card copy of a netdeck anyway, if that is what you like to play with. |
