Hi all,
Today's trial was pretty small (only 50 people), and I managed to come second with a deck I've been working on for about a month now:
// Deck file for Magic Workstation (http://www.magicworkstation.com)
// Lands
4 [SHM] Reflecting Pool
4 [MOR] Murmuring Bosk
3 [LRW] Vivid Creek
4 [LRW] Secluded Glen
4 [EVE] Flooded Grove
1 [LRW] Plains (1)
1 [LRW] Gilt-Leaf Palace
3 [LRW] Vivid Marsh
1 [AT] Swamp (1)
1 [LRW] Forest (2)
// Creatures
3 [SHM] Mistmeadow Witch
4 [EVE] Bloom Tender
3 [LRW] Doran, the Siege Tower
4 [LRW] Sower of Temptation
4 [MOR] Chameleon Colossus
3 [MOR] Reveillark
3 [EVE] Glen Elendra Archmage
// Spells
4 [LRW] Thoughtseize
4 [LRW] Nameless Inversion
2 [LRW] Cryptic Command
// Sideboard
SB: 1 [LRW] Cryptic Command
SB: 2 [SHM] Kitchen Finks
SB: 4 [LRW] Wispmare
SB: 2 [SHM] Faerie Macabre
SB: 2 [LRW] Shriekmaw
SB: 4 [LRW] Mulldrifter
The deck's basically midrange control: you survive the early turns, and stabilise with colossus, doran and sower. If you get mistmeadow witch and bloom tender active, you're then in a good position to win. The Witch protects your creatures, activates reveillark, and allows sower to steal multiple creatures.
The game's actually a bit easier vs control decks, because you have efficient creatures that become very hard to remove, because of witch, archmage and cryptic command. After board it becomes even better, when you bring in mull drifters and faerie macarbre. |

| it's a cool idea i guess becuase since I've seen how powerful Mistmeadow Witch is in limited I've wanted to do something with it for block but besides a blink strategy there wasn't much. |

| yeah, just as he decribes I aggro'd him early and at the end he got the witch out. He basically controlled with it having bloom and alot of land. Use a destroy/remove spell he dodges with it or counters with Elendra when available. Try to battle he removes. Nice deck imo. |

| Whats the mana base like. Is playing Doran too greedy or can you play him easily? |

There was an article on Star City Games about an aggro control deck that could play 4 doran 4 cryptic command, and it said the mana was fine because there were 8 changelings and various on-tribe members for the lands.
Don't believe a word of it, mana like this is far from "fine". After about turn 5 or 6, most of your lands will come into play tapped, because you either wont have the tribal spell, or you wont want to reveal it.
Still, playing doran and cryptic command is worth it IMO. If you were going to cut one or the other, I'd cut command. Doran is too important to your game vs red and faeries, and you need G, W and B for the deck anyway. It's the UUU that's the problem, which is why I eventually cut 2 cryptic command and went to 26 land. It might be worth cutting another spell somewhere for a 3rd command main deck. Possibly a thoughtseize. |
