Why could a java-based chat room be created off the website?
We wouldn't have to connect to IRC, could still find our opponents for tourneys and talk to them over there?
i'm sure this has been proposed before, but i was wondering why it hasn't been implimented? |

| If you would care to look about 500 pixels to the left and a little upwards, you would notice the link saying "Chat & Play Room". |

ya. i think it's more like 550 pixels, acm
there's an established java set-up already. i don't know what you don't like mirc... it has timestamps for rulings, mod settings for your own channels, and is easier on your computer to run. |

You sure Conkiss?
Also, yes, mIRC is much better than any site-based IRC- or Java-based client. |

the java chat also uses irc, so I don't think you mean exactly what you are saying. Anyway, we advise people to use an irc client (like mirc or such) because it is much more versatile than the java client, and also when connecting to irc via the java client people tend to open the java client multiple times and get themselves banned for having too many connections.

It isn't implemented because we don't want to reinvent the wheel and be stuck supporting said wheel.
1) IRC already exists and is very mature. Also, with IRC, we don't have to worry about running the server(s), managing clusters, upgrades, and all the other problems that come with having a homegrown solution.
2) The scripts we use for running tournaments, botski, and other are all written using mIRCscript because it has such a powerful and versatile scripting language. Any other chat solution would mean these scripts also have to be written.
3) There is no guarantee that whatever solution we come up with will not also be blocked by firewalls
4) There hasn't been a need. You're the first person to ever request a non-IRC based chat. Most people are content with connecting to IRC through the applet or using mIRC or some other IRC client.
That said, if I were to implement a non-IRC based chat solution, it would probably use a pretty well defined protocol like Jabber and leverage the chat networks of one or more of the big 3 (yahoo, aol, msn). |
