I had a quick noob question:

If I played a Boros Garrison (or any other lands that return a land to hand when it comes into play) on the first turn...would I be forced to return Boros G. to my hand...thereby not putting out any land at all that turn? Some judge at a draft I went to said this, but it sounded kind of iffy. Thanks again!

It certainly would, if not, it would be kind of broken to put a land that produces two mana into play turn one, with the only drawback of coming into play tapped Wink

When a creature or land is coming into play, it is already in play.
So you would have to return it.

If you're not sure about a ruling and the judge tells you something, go with the judge. He's a judge for a reason.

You can question judges but with something as obvious and simple as this where there is nothing to get confused about there is no real reason. For real complex situations it is often worth asking for the head judge.

You cant always trust the judges actually, some of them dont even play magic and make mis rulings. this one time i was at a ptq, and a judge ruled that lotus bloom wasnt counter by chalice at zero, i quickly told him he was wrong and asked the head judge. so if you feel that one judge is wrong, as the head one. But you were playing a draft which only has one, so you have to make sure he is a good one.

but this judge definatly was right. boros garrison is a land thus would have to be returned if its the only one in play.

All the bounce-lands from the Ravnica block work in the same way, you need to return a land you control to its owner's hand when they come into play. This is a triggered ability, and unless you counter it with an effect like Stifle, you have to fulfill it. That means that you need to choose a valid land on resolution; if that's the only land you control, you cannot avoid choosing it, and you must return it to your hand.
As a side note, since players can respond to the triggered ability, if you had another land in play, your opponent could theoretically bounce it in response to your Boros Garrison's ability to force you to return both lands to your hand.

This is both inaccurate and irrelevant here. The creature or land wouldn't be in play until the "coming into play" action is finished (which means that a Clone cannot copy itself, for instance). And the Boros Garrison ability is triggered, not a replacement ability (which would have the wording "as ~this~ comes in to play...").
