@CoolCreep
You stated something completely and utterly wrong about the collapse of the USSR, period. You got corrected, deal with it.
I'd hammer out the line from Eisenhower's farewell address concerning the people needing to wary of the industrial military complex if you want to play around with quotes. The entire problem with quoting founding fathers is that they are out of context now. Take the right to bare arms as an example: it was entirely concerned with the peoples' right to serve and maintain a militia, not have a gun because they feel like it. If you want to quote someone from American history, it is probably best to quote one from the general area of the mid-twentieth century. Look up some Roosevelt speeches. He was bat shit crazy. American history was last semester though, so some stuff is hazy, but definitely not cold war subject matter.
We should talk history of modern China now. That is what I need to type stuff down about, so I can remember all the Huangs, Wangs, Siungs and Mings better.
ANYWAY, people can have stupid opinions without being stupid. Connotation versus denotation. Linguistics...I'd say take it, but it is absolutely brutal. Want to know the joys of writing stuff down in IPA? Yeah, me neither...lord knows why I am studying it right now.
Drop the left/right wing bullshit. History happens as it happens. Today we have easy access to both sides' accounts, so it is a lot easier to figure out what really happened. I personally have some "liberal" ideas about government and I also have some absolutely "fascist" ones, like forcing criminals and so forth to work in government sanctioned labor camps and projects. I also favor the death penalty. Political labels are ridiculous anyway: their meanings change so often. An example: The United States is actually a republic...apparently people think that each riding having a representative that votes for the leader of the whole nation is democracy. A democracy is every citizen directly voting for the leader of the nation, a republic is every citizen voting for some **** that promises to vote on their behalf. Strangely, people equate the former with communism too...weird.
Either way: cite some stuff off ebsco, jstor or any other academically trusted and regulated source(don't worry I have access to 99% of them) to substantiate your claims about Reagan and we can agree to disagree. otherwise, suck it up and be wrong. I am big enough to admit it when I am wrong, you should be able to do the same, Mister Eight Year Program.
PS.
What are you taking in school? I am having a hard time deciding whether I want to stick with my English major or go to History. Either way, I'll be teaching one or the other for a job. English coincides nicely with written-journalism though.[/i] |

You're still doing these? Haha.
Good post, but I must say, I don't agree with some of the things that you've said. As someone else pointed out, a bit of it seems illogical. |

How is it illogical? War is a fact of existence. Every single day battles happen in other parts of the globe, its not even a leap to say that without our Military they'd be here as well. You can argue the current use of the military, but not the necessity of it as a whole.
Thats the point.
Also good to see you again Bejeezus. |

Someone once said a something to me along the lines of this:
"If no one had any guns and there were no guns, why would we even need them?"
I might have messed it up to how it was originally said, but I think the concept pretty much embodies the argument against armies.
In order for the military of any country to no longer be needed, there would have to be a massive demilitarization that would take place. This is when someone comes in and waves their flag a bunch and gets in everyone's face about terrorism, but global militarization would be the only way that armies could be eliminated.
I am a firm believe that people will not see any further evolution as far as our race's collective conscious is concerned until such a thing happens. Coincidentally, I think we're all going to go extinct before that happens. man's inherent jealousy, stupidity, paranoia and aggressiveness is what makes us pieces of shit. I am not looking forward to seeing what happens when a new international super power swoops in and dethrones the US of A...all the flag wavers and government fat cats are going to shit bricks. |
